What is a biblical Church? Part I – 1 Thess. 1:1-10

6 07 2009

What a biblical Church believes.

A biblical Church has doctrinal beliefs that come from the Bible

  • A biblical church stands on the Bible 6
  • Bible comes first in many statement of beliefs because if you get away from the Bible you eventually get away from the truth about God.
  • You must believe the Trinity, Gospel, Jesus, the Bible
  • Jehovah’s witness are not a true church
  • Mormon or the church of Jesus Christ of later day saints is not a true church
  • it is one thing to interpret the Bible differently – it is another thing to change it altogether.

A biblical church has a correct view of salvation

  • Salvation comes by Faith alone 8
  • Salvation is through Christ alone
  • Salvation is by grace alone 4
  • Those who are saved will repent producing a changed life. 9-10

Worship and Doctrine Part 2 – Rom. 11:33-36

29 10 2008

Romans is the most Doctrinal book in the New Testament. It is mostly concerned with understanding salvation. It is right thinking about salvation that leads Paul to Paise God in worship in the 11th chapter.

When you get saved you don’t know all that has happened to you. The rest of your life will be learning what happened to you. And learning that truth will lead you to worship God more and more.

We worship God for what we do know.

The songs that we sing are proof this. “O’ Worship the king” – We know He is our shield and defender so we worship. Even modern songs like “Made to worship” show this point. You and I were made to worship you and I are forgiven and free. It is because we know that we are forgiven that we worship. Jesus says knowing the truth sets you free. Doctrine is simply Biblical truth and it will set you free to worship God. Right doctrine is the engine the powers true worship.  Paul went through several chapters of doctrine before he got to our passage today where he praised God.

  1. We know all have sinned – Rom. 3:23
  2. We know God showed love to us. Rom. 5:8
  3. We know God sent Jesus so we could died to sin. Rom. 6:11
  4. We know that there is no condemnation 8:1
  5. We know all things work for good. 8:28
  6. We know nothing can separate us from God. 8:327-39
  7. We know that salvation is completely of God’s mercy 9:15-16
  8. We know that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 10:13

We worship God for what we are learning.

  • Don’t use the excuse we will never know everything about God to get you out of learning more about God.   J. I. Packer wrote “Knowing God” and it is a good book to read to learn more about God.
  • I’m always wanting to learn more because learning drives correct worship. Ignorance is not bliss. Sins committed in ignorance are still sins. Sin is transgression of the law whether one knows it to be the law or not. It does work to tell the officer, I didn’t know the speed limit was only 45 right here. We must learn because what we fail to learn is our fault.

We Worship God because everything is from him, through him and to him.

  • You cannot give anything to God that is not already his.
  • You cannot tell God something he does not already know.

We worship God for what we do not know.

  • It is true we do not know everything about God. And sometimes his ways seem to us to be backward, but we are not God.
  • We don’t know how God can choose some people and not others and still be just in punishing them.
  • We don’t know when Jesus is returning

Doctrine and Worship Part 1 – Mark 7:1-13

29 10 2008

When man makes rules…

  • It is to control others – power. It is not for the good of others.
  • It leads to pride.
  • It confuses people about what God expects.
  • We can focus on the rules and not think about God.

What is Vain Worship?

It is always vain worship where wrong doctrine is being taught. 7

  • Their doctrine made them feel good about themselves.
  • It was wrong doctrine that lead the Israelites to worship a golden calf.

It is always vain worship to worship only the way we want to worship.

  • They made more rules because they wanted to.
  • When we do what we want to, we tend to do what is less sacrificial and less accurate.
  • When we worship the way we want we tend to elevate our ways above God’s.
  • It is like giving something we want (instead of what they want)to somebody for their B-day.

It is always vain worship to leave God’s commandments out completely. 9

  • Never preaching and teaching against what God commands is vain worship.
  • Saying it does not matter if you obey is not worship.

It is always vain worship to only worship on the outside. 7

  • We must worship on the inside as well as the outside.

Worship must be done God’s way – from the Bible.

  • It must use God’s doctrine.
  • It must come from God’s word and no more than that.
  • It must be done from the heart.
  • Jesus worshiped God’s way.
  • Jesus used God word to show their way was wrong.

What would Jesus say to us today?

Sometimes we are to strict on the nonessentials.

  • Don’t eat at place that have a bar.
  • The Bible teaches us not to be conformed to the world, but to run and hide in a cave to avoid the world.
  • Don’t talk to sinful people and certainly don’t invite them to your house. Treat them like they have a disease. You’re sure to influence them that way.

Sometimes we are to relaxed on the essentials.

  • Those that focus on the nonessentials have let many clear teachings of the Bible be overlooked in their lives.

Sermon Summary 1-6-08

6 01 2008

The Son is Equal to the Father – John 5:18-29

Doctrine matters. What people believe matter. Acts 2:42 says, “They devoted themselves to the apostles doctrine.” Theology matters. Some people get scared when we talk about doctrine and theology. Theology is simply the study of God. The reason we are afraid of it is it divides.  On the other hand, the reason the church is so weak; the reason the church looks much more like the world today than it has in the past is because there is an absence of theology. Don’t be afraid of theology digg it, dude. The reason we don’t worship God like we ought is because we don’t know the God we worship. The more we know about God the more we worship God. You have studied cell phonology, and remote controlology, either by reading the instruction or having one of your young children or grandchildren preach it to you. Doctrine matters more than all of that 10 millions times.

How are the Father and Son equal?

1. Both do the same thing 18-19

  • John 10:30 “I and the Father are One.”

  • When Jesus was alive he did everything 100% what God the Father wanted him to do.

  • When Jesus was born, baptized, betrayed, and beaten, it was all the perfect will of God.

  • When He cleansed the temple, it was God cleansing the temple. When he heal the blind it was God who healed the blind.

  • Col. 1:16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.

2. Both raise the dead to life 21

  • Power over life Spiritually. He raised the Spirit. 25-26
    • When God changes a heart, Jesus changes a heart. When we say our God saves, we are saying Jesus Saves Jesus Saves.

  • Power over life Physically: He raises the Body. 28-29

  • They both have this power because life is in each of them. 26

3. Both deserve equal honor 23

  • We cannot honor Father without honoring the Son. 23

There are groups of people who do not believe what I have just shown you in Scripture. Jews, Muslim, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witness, and even some self proclaimed preachers.

What is the Purpose of this equality?

1. So that we Worship the Son and the Father.

  • So that we marvel 20

    • We cannot and will not worship or marvel about this unless we believe it. We worship God more when we know more about God. Learn about God.

    • The mystery of this truth leads us to marvel.

    • Rom. 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

  • So that we honor the Son as the Father 23

    • It is the judgment of the Son that leads us to honor him as God. 22

2. So that we have eternal Life. 24

  • The dead must hear the Son to have life 24

    • A man who does not know Jesus Christ, but thinks he is saved because he goes to church is like a man who calls himself a doctor, because he wears a white coat.

    • A person who thinks they are saved, but habitually lies, steals, and lives a sexually immoral life has not and does not hear the voice of the savior. Their hearts are like stone. They love their sin more than the Savior.
