Jesus Causes Church Split. – John 6:60-71

The split happened because of what Jesus said.

Some Left

  1. Some think it is too hard to accept. 60

  2. Some don’t like authority.

  3. Some like the way they are living more than the way Jesus wants them to live.

  4. All have not been give Life by the Spirit. 63 They don’t believe. 64

Some Stayed 68

1. They stayed because they really believed that only Jesus has the words of eternal life.

  • Those who stay really believe that there is no other option and they don’t want any other option.

  • When things get hard they stay. When Jesus says things that are difficult they stay.

2. They stayed because they really know Jesus.

  • They know the Jesus who called them.

  • They know the One who loves them more than anyone else.

  • They know Him, so when he says, “come.” They come. When He says, “go.” They go. When He says “don’t.” They don’t. When He says, “do.” They do. When it comes to Jesus, their motto is “Obey first, ask questions later.”

Jesus knows the difference between those who truly believe and those who only pretend to believe. V. 64

  1. A believer is a follower.

  2. A believer is a stayer.

  3. Those who leave are not truly followers. 1 John 2:19

What was the purpose for Jesus teaching?

    1. To proclaim the truth

    • Truth is more important than unity or a big following.

    2. To cause a split.

    • There is no room in Christ’s church for those who do not believe Him.

What if Jesus would NOT have caused the split?

    1. It would have given many a false assurance.

    • Believing we are saved when we are not is like a man on LSD hallucinating and thinks he can fly, so he jumps off a building and dies. False assurance kills any attempt at true spiritual life.

    2. New followers would have a false understanding of what it means to be a disciple.

    • New followers might look at the current followers and their lack of belief and think that to be a true followers is to be a fence rider like the other followers.

    • When I go to the funeral of some one I know did not live the Christian life, and the minister says “He is in heaven today. He was a member of I-never-attend Baptist Church,” it makes me vomit. It is sickening. Living that way does not glorify God. Telling people he/she is in heaven does not glorify God. It tells everybody at the funeral who is not saved that this is what it takes to go to heaven. It says live like this guy! And most of them already do. So the minister just told the crowd that everybody is okay. Keep living like you’re living. Go on keep sinning it will not keep you from going to heaven. Go on keep not following Jesus, that does not matter.

2 Things Jesus Implies by what he said…

    1. We cannot interpret his words anyway you want too.

    • If Jesus would have believed this he would have said, “Oh no don’t get upset. Just because I believe that doesn’t mean you have too.”

    2. We must take serious what he says.

    • If Jesus would have believed people were more important than his message. He would have said, “Oh no don’t get upset. You are taking me way too seriously. It was a joke. My goal here it to get as many people on board as possible and I would not want to offend you.”

The Bread of Life Brings Eternal Life.  Prt. 2 – John 6:41-59

We Must Believe in the true Bread of Life.

  •  At least the Jews really cared who Jesus is. 41

  • The wrong Bread of Life will not bring eternal life any more than moldy bread will be good for your health.

  • Many today do not care who he is, as long as the church is doing well, they are happy, and life is good.

  • The fastest growing churches (which are not true churches) are those that don’t believe the Jesus of the Bible.

  • Many preachers believe things that are not true about Jesus, but it does not bother us because they know how to tell a joke, they are great communicators, and they can grow big churches.

  • Individually we do this as well. We don’t care to think very deeply about Jesus. We just want to know that he loves us and will take care of us.

  • Jesus is Eternal. He lived before he was born and He still lives today.

  • 8 times Jesus says he “came down from heaven.”

We Must Believe What the Bread of Life says.

He says Salvation comes in a certain order.

  1. Father draws

  2. You come

  3. You have eternal life.

  • If you skip the first part there is no true coming and no eternal life.

  • If you skip the first you may come, but it will not be a genuine coming; maybe you didn’t count the cost. You’ll have moments of improvement rather than moments of slipping.

  • Those that go on living like they did before they “came” to Jesus only show that the Father did not draw them; they only show they have not tasted the Bread of Life. 53

He says Salvation is Eternal

  • That has been the whole point of this passage.  Jesus is better than the manna that came to the Israelites because those that ate the manna still died.  Those that eat of the Bread of Life will live forever.

  • Because Jesus will never lose those who the Father calls. – 37-40

  • Eternal – 4 times 22-59 – 27, 40, 47, 54

  • Illustration – Finding Jesus is like a poor man who tells his friends that he found a pot of gold.  Though his friends have never seen the pot of gold, they believe him because he has a new car, house, and clothes.  The way that he lives proves that he has really found gold. His friends believe him and want what he has.

  • Someone who claims to be Christian but does not live like it, is like a man who says he has found a pot of gold, but continues to live in poverty. He tells his friends he has found it, but they don’t believe him.  They don’t believe him because he is still living in poverty a week later.  The way that he lives proves to them that he does not know what he is talking about or that he is crazy.

  • The person who has been drawn by the Father comes and it changes their life, just like finding a pot of gold changes a poor mans life.

He says unless we come to him, we will not have eternal life. – 53

  • The Jews asking these questions here were not Christians, because they did not believe what Jesus was saying.

Are you the one who has the pot of gold or do you just talk about it?

Jesus brings Eternal Life… (John 6:22-40)

By doing something physically to show something spiritual.

But He knows our motives for seeking eternal life. 24-26

What is the right reason to seek God?

  1. Seek him because of who He is and you are. Sinners in need of a Savior.

  2. Seek him for the eternal not the temporary. Matt. 6:33

By the work of God 29

  • Not by mans work, but God’s work.

  • The work they trusted in produced temporary results. – Moses 31-33

  • The work that God produces has eternal results.

  • God’s work is in man.

  • God’s work is the Bread of Life.

  • When God works there are results. 34-39
