The Flood: Noah’s Faithfulness. Gen. 7:1-24

16 04 2008
The Character of the Faithful.
The faithful plan for Worship. 2-4
  • Noah gathered 7 pairs of clean animals for sacrifice later.
  • Gen. 8:20-21 Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.
  • Worship takes effort.  The more effort we put into it the more meaningful it is to us.

The faithful obey the word of God. 5, 9, 16,

  • They don’t just know what God says, they do what God says.
  • They don’t just consider what God says.
  • Sometimes when I am tempted it helps me to think about other people. If other people did with their sins like I am doing with my sins, what would I say to them.

The faithful remember the mighty acts of God. 6, 11

  • Noah remembers the exact day of devastation.
  • Noah remembers how long it lasted.
  • They remember the day of salvation.
  • The few who escaped 9-11 remember it far better.

One Faithful Person Makes a Difference.
The Difference is the Salvation of others. 1

  • The Faithfulness of one leads to the salvation of others. It was true with my mom and dad.
  • The Faithfulness of a father generally leads to the saving of the whole family.
  • We are not only to see people saved, but to disciple them. Matt. 28

Noah’s life was discipleship to his family.

  • A disciple never exceeds his teacher. A half hearted disciple will only produce a half hearted disciple of Jesus. A half hearted disciple will never produce a whole hearted disciple.

The Difference is made during the difficult times.

  • God is not looking for people to love him only when things are good.
  • God is looking for people who will love him and serve him even when everybody else isn’t or when a flood comes.

The Faithful are Blessed.

The Blessing is from the Lord. 1, 16

  • Gen. 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

Blessings come after obedience. 1

  • If you want to avoid the blessing of God, then just don’t listen to him.
  • The reason Noah found favor with God was because God SAW his righteousness. If you want to miss the ark of Salvation, just do SOME of what God has commanded you to do not all.
  • Blessings generally never come when we do not take God seriously.
  • Blessing don’t come when our jobs come before obeying God. Blessing don’t come when our status comes before God.
  • Blessing don’t come when our God can not see our righteousness.
  • Righteousness is seen in actions. God could see that Noah obeyed.

The Flood: God Graciously Saves. Gen. 6:9-22

16 04 2008

We are saved by Grace.

It was God’s grace because God came to Noah.

It was God’s grace because Noah did not deserve it.

Belief in God produces Obedience. 22

  • Heb. 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

  • James 2:17-18 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

If obedience does not happen there is a reason.

  • Obedience will not happen if we believe family is more important than God.

  • Lord, I can’t fully commit, your going to kill my extended family and friends!

  • Some people don’t believe in God because God has taken a family member from them. God has allowed something bad to happen. They say I thought God was a loving god and he did this. Well God did something worse he killed everyone in the world, except 8, at one time.

  • Noah could have said God, why are you doing this? That is my father, my mother, by brothers and sisters, my nieces and nephews. I’m not going to commit to follow you. If Noah would have done that he would not have been saved he would have drowned. All those who treat God like that will receive the flood of God’s wrath on judgment day.

  • Obedience does not happen if we believe popularity is more important than God.

  • Lord, I just can’t take the ridicule!

  • Noah probably felt alone in the world. He was the only one who would listen to God. He didn’t fit in.

  • Obedience does not happen when you don’t believe what God says.

  • Lord, Are you sure, it has never rained before?

  • Obedience does not happen when you believe other things are more important than the Lord.

  • Lord, I would build an Ark, but I’m too busy!

  • Obedience does not happen when you believe you can put God off until later.

  • Lord, I’ll obey you just not right now!

If obedience did not happen Noah would have drowned in the flood.

  • You say God will not get that angry with me. He is a loving God.

  • Just as sure as God brought a flood in Noah’s day he will bring a final judgment day in the future. Just as sure as people did not believe it then, they will not believe it now.

  • When judgment day comes, God is going to say, I told you this was going to happen. Why did you not build an Ark? I told you this was going to happen, but you didn’t believe me. I told you this was going to happen, but you where too busy. I told you this was going to happen, but you wanted to wait until later. I told you this was going to happen, but you where too worried about what others were going to think of you. I told you this was going to happen, but you thought other things were more important.

The Flood: The End of God’s Patience. Gen. 6:1-8

31 03 2008

Introduction to the Flood.

  • The flood took place 1656 years from Adam.
  • There were ten generations from Adam to Noah.
  • If the average family consisted of 18 members, then the ten generations would have produced a population of 774,840,979 by the time of the flood. If the average family numbered twenty, then the population would be two billion.” (Dr. David Skinner taken from Alphred M. Rehwinkel, The Flood in the Light of the Bible, Beology, and Archaeology. 1951.)
  • Compare that to the World pop. Today 6.7 Billion
  • In the last 30 years the world population has grown about 2.3 Billion.  Therefore it is easy to understant how the population at the time of the flood was near 1 Billion at least.
  • Adam was alive into the 9th generation. He died 56 years into Lamech (Noah’s father) life.
  • Methuselah died the same year as the flood.

What Caused God’s Patience to end?

1. Choosing unbelieving spouses caused God’s patience to end.

  • There are three views of the “Sons of God” and the daughters of men in this passage.

  • The first one says that the ”sons of God” were angels or in this case demons.

  • The second says that the “sons of God” were Seth’s linage and they married the ”daughters of men” which was wicked before God.

  • The third view says that the “sons of God” were rulers who married the daughters of men, which produced wickedness.

Though their are pros and cons to all these views there are some things that are certain.

  • God is never pleased when believer intermarry with unbelievers.

  • Generally when believers marry unbeliever is does not go well and that seems to be what is implied here.  Whatever happened in verse 1-4 seems so have led or been the cuase of God saying their thought were only evil continually.

  • What is the big deal? God knows best.

  • Don’t date until your ready to marry.

  • Don’t date anyone you would not marry.

  • If you disobey God when it comes to marriage, you are welcoming a flood of problems into your life and marriage.

  • Parents need to teach their children to choose a spouse that loves the Lord.

Transition: It seems that bad marriage choices led to a generation of giant sinners, which had children, so that the whole world was corrupt.

2. Evil people caused God’s patience to end.

  • Evil thoughts

  • Some would say thoughts don’t count as sin, but God flooded the world because of sinful thoughts.

  • Evil continually

  • When your thoughts go sinful your deed will caught up sooner or later. Even if they don’t God knows our thoughts.

  • They were so evil, they did not change though Noah preached to them another 120 years.

  • 2 Peter 2:5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

  • Rev. Joe Wright. Kansas Senate Leg. Nov. 30, 1998.
  • “We confess that: We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism. We have worshipped other gods and called it multi-culturalism. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn children and called it a choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it political savvy. We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.”

God’s Patience is Amazing

  • It is sometimes thought that our sin is not that bad because God has not punished us for it. Our rational goes something like this, “If I were all that bad then God would have showed me and punished me for it.”

  • It may be that God has not punished us fully because it would wipe us out and we would not have another chance.  The fact that God does not punish us immediately does not minimize our sin it heighten His patience with us.

  • It is amazing the God waited until all but 8 where lost to corruption. V12

  • It is amazing the God waited until they were totally consumed with evil.

  • It is amazing the God gave them another 120 years after that.

    • Some people count to 3 before they punish their children.  God’s patience extends to 120.

  • It is amazing the God allowed 8 to live on.

One day God’s Patience will end again and we will know how serious God is, but then it will be to late.
